strawberries

strawberries will always taste like summer -
out in the open fields with my mother beside me.
searching for the sweetest bites,
under the weight of the sun.

she would always say,
they’re sweeter in korea.
every summer, the same comment.
every summer, i rolled my eyes.

until in 2018,
i find myself in the full bloom of seoul,
biting into one and finally understood -
a truly sweet strawberry.

i am my mother’s daughter -
and now, without fail
each time i eat a strawberry,
i hear myself say it too.

it’s one of the few tender moments,
from a childhood that felt less so -
a season for making jam.
a passing whisper,
that now brings a quiet smile
with each bite of sweetness.
